Capsule Wardrobe | What Is It?

August 11, 2017

So, last week I shared why I capsule. This week I’m sharing the details on exactly what it is… in the coming weeks, I’ll be sharing a detailed post every Friday about how to go about planning your perfect capsule!

I have been doing my casule now for at least six months and love it.

So… what is the actual concept of a Capsule Wardrobe? According to Wikipedia it is a term coined by Susie Faux, the owner of a London boutique called “Wardrobe” in the 1970s. According to Faux, a capsule wardrobe is a collection of a few essential items of clothing that don’t go out of fashion, such as skirts, trousers, and coats, which can then be augmented with seasonal pieces.

From person to person, it varies. I’ve heard a capsule should contain anywhere from 10 pieces to 50 pieces. I, for sure, did my capsule a bit different. I have four different capsules, each category within a capsule contains about 10-15 pieces each:

Tops

tanks, tees, sweaters

Bottoms

shorts, jeans, khakis

Dress

blouses, skirts, trousers, dresses

Athleisure

tops, bottoms

Some people choose to do seasonal wardrobes. Living in NC, it is likely that I will need a tank top and long sleeve shirt in the same week at some times of the year, so I choose to do mine by “type” of clothing. I also didn’t go crazy putting things like basic camisoles, PJs and shoes into a capsule.

When I did my first and second sweep through my closet (we’ll talk about this more next week), I did pair down and keep only the essentials, and the items that I loved. Let’s just say my Goodwill got a whole lot of inventory from my closet!

I hope you guys will join me next Friday to go over HOW to create a capsule wardrobe!

YES! And also saves you money! Stops you from impulse buying and thinking of what your needs actually are 🙂
