Right now you might be deep in nursery decisions, building out your baby registry, and trying to figure out which car seat actually fits in your backseat. Booking a newborn photographer? That feels like something future-you can totally handle after baby arrives. But knowing when to book your newborn photographer is essential for capturing those precious early moments.
Here’s the thing — future-you is going to be sleep-deprived, running on coffee and adrenaline, and honestly unsure what day of the week it is. Present-you, on the other hand, has the mental bandwidth to make this decision thoughtfully and actually get the photographer you want. So let’s talk about timing, because it matters more than most people realize.

Why Booking Early Is the Gift You Give Yourself
Understanding when to book your newborn photographer will ensure you don’t miss out on this important opportunity.
I book a limited number of newborn sessions each month — intentionally. It’s how I make sure every family gets my full attention and care, not just a spot on an overflowing calendar. And because of that, my sessions do book out, especially during busy seasons in the Charlotte and Lake Norman area.
The sweet spot? Reaching out in your second trimester. I know that might feel early when you’re still in the thick of pregnancy, but booking then means you get to choose your photographer because you love her work and feel good about the experience — not because she was the only one with availability.
When you book while you’re still pregnant, there’s no rushing, no scrambling, and no stress. You get to look forward to your session instead of panicking to find one.
Let’s Clear Up a Common Myth About Newborn Timing
You’ve probably heard that newborn photos need to happen in the first week or two because babies need to be “in that sleepy window.” I want to gently push back on that — because the way I work is a little different.
I use a baby-led posing approach. That means I follow your baby’s cues and let them move and settle naturally, rather than positioning them into elaborate poses that require them to be completely limp and deeply asleep. The result is imagery that feels organic, soft, and true to who your baby already is.
That said, if super sleepy, curled-up newborn photos are your dream, the 7–14 day window is still the ideal time for your session. Babies tend to be a bit more drowsy and curl up beautifully in those early days. But my approach gives us flexibility that more traditional newborn photography doesn’t. In fact, some moms’s choose to book their newborn session at one month, so baby is looking less “wrinkly” and mom is feeling more like herself.
How the Scheduling Actually Works
Here’s something I love about the way I handle newborn bookings: we work around your baby, not the other way around.
When you book while you’re pregnant, we’ll tentatively schedule your session for 7–14 days after your due date. As your due date gets closer, you just keep me in the loop — if you’re feeling like baby might come early, or if you’re still waiting past your due date, we stay in communication and adjust from there.
Because I keep my monthly client load intentional and manageable, there’s built-in flexibility for the beautiful unpredictability of newborns. Babies don’t follow schedules, and your session timeline shouldn’t have to either.
What If You’re Already Past Your Due Date — Or Baby Is Already Here?
First: take a breath. And please don’t feel guilty.
If you’re reading this in the thick of early postpartum and realizing when to book your newborn photographer slipped through the cracks, reach out. I will always do my absolute best to make it work. If my calendar truly can’t accommodate your timing, I’ll point you toward someone I trust so your baby’s early days are still beautifully documented.
No judgment, no lectures. Just help.
What Reaching Out Actually Looks Like
I want this part to feel easy, because it is. There’s no commitment, no pressure, and no awkward sales pitch when you get in touch with me. It’s genuinely just a conversation.
When you reach out, it helps to include your due date, whether this is your first baby, and any initial questions you have. From there, I typically respond within 24 hours and we can set up a quick call or chat over email — whatever feels right for you.
And truly, there’s no such thing as too early. I love connecting with expecting mamas early in pregnancy. It gives us time to get to know each other, talk through your vision, discuss wardrobe and styling (yes, I have a full studio wardrobe you can borrow), and make sure everything feels right long before your session day arrives. We also book your professional hair and make up with Angelica or Julia for the day of your session.
By the time baby is here, you’ll already feel taken care of. That’s the goal.
Your Future Self Will Thank You
After 14 years of photographing newborns in the Charlotte and Lake Norman area, the one thing I know for certain is this: the families who plan ahead are the ones who get to be fully present for the experience. They’re not stressed about logistics. They’re not settling for whoever had an opening. They’re just showing up, breathing it in, and letting me take care of everything else.
That’s what I want for you.
Whether you’re just finding out you’re pregnant or you’re counting down the weeks and wondering when to book your newborn photographer, right now is the perfect time to reach out. I’d love to be part of your story.
