As a photographer that specializes in Child Portraiture, you would think I would be very punctual with my own daughter’s session. Alas, I’m guilty… Evie’s birthday came and went, and although we had two seperate celebrations in the month of October, my baby didn’t get her celebratory cake smash didn’t commence until ALMOST the 14 month mark- 12.21.13 to be exact!
I knew what I had in mind for a theme based off the backdrop (fabric) I had. This right here folks is a completely DIY cake smash… including the table that she’s sitting on, which happens to be my former craft room table that you can see more about HERE.
After deciding on a backdrop, I picked fabrics for her headband and whipped that up. Next up, was the cake stand. I had seen a few on Etsy and thought… aha! I can do that! I just hit up the local craft store’s wood section, bought some plaques and a candlestick, painted them and screwed or glued them together. I also made the cake with two 6″ cake pans and some good old fashioned buttercream and a piping bag.
Evie was very unsure of the cake at first. She’s had a cupcake before, but I think this was a bit more intimidating! She is such a dainty eater, we tried to get her to smash into the cake multiple times, but she just wasn’t having it. Daddy had to help her along by smashing her hands and feet into the cake, and she still ended up just picking at the crumbs that fell off!
Afte the first few bites, she was definitely enjoying herself and getting more animated! After what seemed like a million globs of icing later, we figured we better wrap it up before she got sick!
